Photos: Microsoft's new Surface 3 tablet

Microsoft has pared down the specs in favour of portability.

The new Surface 3 is powered by an Intel Atom X7 quad-core processor, and is said to last ten hours on battery.

Microsoft picked a 1920 x 1080 HD 10.8-inch screen for the Surface 3.

Surface 3 weighs 622 grams.

The built-in Kickstand has only three positions on the Surface 3.

A $280 docking station makes the Surface 3 more desktop-friendly.

Like the previous generation of Surface devices, the Surface 3 can be used with a pen that now comes in multiple colours - it's sold separately however, costing $60.

The Surface 3 Type Cover with a keyboard costs $180.

Australia and New Zealand miss out on the 4G LTE connectivity that the US and some other markets will be offered for the Surface 3.

The Surface business achieved over a billion dollars in sales for Microsoft - which hopes the new device will eat into Apple iPad sales.
