Election 2013: IT skills policy Election 2013: IT skills policy

With Australian IT workers feeling threatened by skilled migrants, the major discussion point relating to skills and jobs in the lead up to the election has been 457 Visas.

In June the government passed a bill amending the Migration Act, forcing companies to place advertisements for jobs to prove they have looked to fill them locally first. It also gives Fair Work inspectors powers to investigate potential breaches.

The Greens want employers to provide evidence of the now required advertisements seeking local workers, as well as the results of the advertising. The Coalition has supported Labor’s laws addressing 457 visa abuse, but also suggested it would allow more 457 visas as a mainstay of its immigration program.

Labor:

  • Has committed $28 million to promote “high-tech jobs” in the transport, financial services and digital sectors.
  • Coalition:

  • Says it will evaluate government-funded programs seeking to develop digital skills or awareness against the stated objectives of these programs and focus expenditure on programs/providers generating identifiable economic or social returns.
