Trend Micro has updated and patched its online public Virus Encyclopedia (VE) after external hackers altered part of the listing.

Trend Micro patches online search after hack
According to the TrendLabs Malware blog, the security vendor discovered changes to VE - its online malware encyclopedia that details the specifications of threats including their effects, type, channel and trigger date - last week.

Nobody visiting the site was infected or at any risk, confirmed Trend Micro in its blog. "The redirect placed on our site didn’t work properly so nobody visiting the hacked pages was at risk of infection."

The incident has since been rectified. “In response to this incident, we shut down the VE for several hours, patched the systems, removed the inserted code, and brought it back to life again," stated the blog.

“We have already taken interim measures to further harden the VE system against future attacks. This incident was part of a wider attack on Web sites around the world."

Local representatives of Trend Micro are yet to respond to calls for comment.
