When companies suffer security breaches, it is how they handle them - and the customer - that counts.

Opinion: Sent by my ego

Why is it necessary for users of these new email capable wonder phones like the Crackberry and the JesusPhone to include a footnote with every message telling you “Sent from my ”?

Online identity theft: Who's after my Facebook password?

The questions of "who" and "why" in identity theft remain largely ignored. That is, "Who is after online identities? And what for?"

Why is my spam in colour?

Why is my spam in colour?

Today one out of four emails on the internet is an image spam message. This is not because spammers have just realised the marketing benefits of captive colours. Instead, this is because the spammers have identified a weakness in many anti-spam systems and are moving diligently to maximise this opportunity by fully exploiting this weakness.

What do you like the most about your job? The changing demands in security. Never the same problem twice. I have never had two days the same.

How did you get into security? I was the sole IT person for a small community bank, and as security became more prevalent in the industry and regulators began focusing on it, I had to become much more knowledgeable in that area.

How did you get into security? In my case, the question could be phrased, "How did security get into you?" I am not an infosec professional in the usual sense, but rather a business manager with infosec responsibility. I manage business and product development and information security, which is a central thread that composes the fabric of our product offerings.

How did you get into security? I got into security eight years ago. Before that I switched between platform and network administration after a few years of application development. Now security has become a daily routine.

What does your job entail? Anything involving the network – basically making sure people get the information they are looking for. We have 400 restaurants and all of the information captured there needs to find its way to headquarters.

How did you get into security? I came from the physics field to begin with. I jumped in here about 11 years ago. I started as a programmer — Visual Basic, web applications, that sort of thing, and decided after a year or so that I didn’t enjoy that. So I switched over to IT administration…and from there started doing system administration and part of that has to be security. I just sort of moved more and more and taught myself more and more about security as part of system administration. I just took an interest in it.

I had worked first in physical security and then in law enforcement since I was 18 years-old. But I got tired of getting shot at, literally. So I decided to do something more sedate. I worked on officers' computers. I went into a computer helpdesk role back in 2000. I had the joy of finding out that you could do computers and security and I have never looked back.
