The bank said the mobile wallet could be used “via compatible Samsung Galaxy, wearables and other compatible devices".

The move is likely to be welcomed by customers, who have been calling on CBA to adopt handset-native mobile wallets like Samsung Pay and Apple Pay for some time.

Samsung Pay launched in Australia in mid-2016. It was available to American Express and Citibank customers at launch.

Westpac was the first of the major banks to support Samsung Pay last year, a deal that was quickly followed by Cuscal, which supports credit unions and small banks.

CBA is also an adopter of Google’s Android Pay wallet, which it signed on to offer late last year.

The bank also has its own ‘tap and pay’ service which can be utilised by both Android and iOS device owners.

CBA’s adoption of Samsung Pay is likely to raise speculation on whether the bank will finally relent and sign up to Apple Pay.

It was one of several banks that has boycotted the Apple service due to the inability to pass on fees to customers or access the NFC chip in iPhones.
