Photos: Weird and wonderful tech at CeBIT Australia 2011

Australia's largest IT exhibition is back for another year, with business technology taking centre stage. In all, there are over 2,000 different technologies vying for attention during the three day event, ranging from lowly HDMI cables to futuristic touch screen tabletops.

Hannover Fairs expect 30,000 people at CeBIT this week. Communications Minister Stephen Conroy kicked off the event by announcing the Government's goal is for Australia to be in the top five OECD countries with homes that have broadband. By 2020 the government also wants to double the number of people "teleworking".

Despite reports that CeBIT has been getting progressively smaller, the showroom floor remains dauntingly huge. What you're seeing here is roughly a third of the entire floorspace.

CeBIT is a curious mix of everyday components of business networks, and the cutting edge, like this...the Emotiv EPOC headset. The manufacturers claim the device can be trained to recognise mental commands.

From the "here's a product we didn't know we needed" department - the Wineye Eye-Witness Car BlackBox gives your car a video feed of the road ahead. In the case of an accident without witnesses, the idea is you'll have a digital copy of the footage as evidence.

There's a lot of technology at this show that you won't find at your local digital superstore - like this military standard phone. As well as withstanding minus 40 Celsius to 70 Celsius temperatures, the phone has an altimeter, GPS, G-sensor, and an RFID option. It runs Windows Mobile 6.1, but you can't win them all.

We spotted this touchscreen table - it's a research prototype. Click one of the round icons on the map....

...and you get a live video feed from a wireless camera mounted on a surfboard.

This tiny uRemote WiFi hub is designed to let you use your phone or tablet as a remote control for all your digital devices. It works with iPhone and iPad, and we're told a Windows and Android version is on the way.

Back view of the uRemote hub. The hub itself costs a couple of hundred dollars. The advantage, we're told, is that you'll be able to control all your devices from one screen, without using multiple apps.

More evidence that's it's becoming a post-PC world - this Samsung Galaxy Tab is connecting to a networked TV to stream video or photos to the big screen.

The Tab will even connect to this Samsung SH100 camera. You can actually control the camera remotely, zoom in, and take pictures using the tablet, without touching the camera itself. We're not sure we see the point, though being able to view your photos instantly on the larger screen seems useful.

This year's CeBIT is cloudy - literally and figuratively. It seems every second vendor has someway to mention the cloud, from home automation software that sits "in the cloud", to Telstra's hosted small business services.

Speaking of home automation software: this is the Switch Automation system. You can control your home from a central touchscreen, including air conditioning, lighting and security.

One of the benefits of modern home automation systems is the ability to have devices automatically power down to avoid using more electricity than you'd like.

Like something out of the Bourne Supremacy, this SCS-100 is a secure communications system that lets government ministers, big mining companies, or anyone needing to access "highly classified" networks while being protected by built-in security.

This is the multiple user version - devices like this used to be the size of several briefcases, and required a technical operator. This new version is designed to be friendly enough for non-technical users.

Would you stick this into your eyes? According to Chinese manufacturer Shenzhen Breo, the Eye Massager will help you to relax and "feel refreshment". We gave it a go: it made us feel squishy.

The range of technology on display was very diverse, including hospital equipment (complete with creepy mannequins).

The Mini POS mobile stock system. It might not appeal to consumers, but this sort of thing is CeBIT's bread and butter.

The Terra Master F2-300 2-disk audio and video entertainment storage system has been revamped with USB 3.0 support. The dinky carry handle is a cute touch.
