Updated: Around 50,000 businesses affected.

IP telephony services to around 50,000 Telstra customers have been unavailable since 6:30am this morning due to problems with Telstra’s primary IP Telephony (TIPT) server.

The outage has also affected Telstra SIP Connect and WebCC customers. Most of the 50,000 affected customers are large businesses.

A Telstra spokesperson told iTnews services were downed after the primary TIPT server failed and the secondary backup server similarly failed to kick in.

“Around 6:30am we had an outage in one of our TIPT centres and unfortunately the redundancy was lost when the backup server failed,” the spokesperson said.

Services were down Australia-wide until about 10:30am this morning when the first services were restored.

Telstra said it was seeing good progress and hoped to have the three services fully restored in the next hour.

It is yet to identify the cause of both failures but is investigating.

Update 12:06pm: Telstra advised its services had been fully restored at 11:20am.

Update 5:00pm: Following reports customers were still experiencing issues with the above services, Telstra clarified that all voice services had been restored by 11:20am, but other features were being restored progressively throughout the day.
