L7 Solutions wins contract with Woodside Petroleum, worth $6M+

Western Australian-based IT service provider L7 Solutions has hit the big time with a $6 million plus contract to overhaul ASX-listed Woodside Petroleum’s LAN and IP Telephony infrastructure in Perth and North West regional areas.

Woodside Petroleum was formed in 1954 and headquartered in Perth, Western Australia with over 3000 staff. It’s worth $34 million in market capitalisation.

Matt Sullivan, managing director at L7, told CRN that Woodside’s lease agreements for its existing equipment was coming to an end and replacement equipment was required. At the same time, the IP telephony system (Cisco Call Manager) needed to be upgraded to provide new features and handsets that supported gigabit Ethernet workstations.

“Woodside went out to tender with the contract around May/June. About five other service providers were selected and it took them around fourth months for them to make a decision and finally sign us up. We started work on the project around three weeks ago” he said.

Sullivan explained that one of the major attractions for Woodside to L7 was its location.

“A lot of the other multinationals we went up against had bases all over Australia and New Zealand. However we are based solely in WA and have concentrated all our resources in this region. I strongly believe that was a major attraction for Woodside, as its main base is in this region” he said.

Under the terms of the four-year agreement, L7 will provide Woodside with the procurement and implementation of all networking and telephony projects and the supply and provision of all maintenance and support for the Woodside environment.

Technically, the initial projects involve upgrading the LAN in Perth, upgrading the LAN at the Karratha gas plant, and upgrading the IP telephony environment in Perth. All products will come from networking giant, Cisco.

“None of our other clients will be affected by our win. Currently we have built our capabilities with around 80 people, but within six months we should have 120 all up. Around 10 of our engineers will work on the Woodside project, depending on how the projects are scheduled,” he said.

Most recently, L7 Solutions won a contract to service Perth International and Domestic Airport with an IP Telephony solution by Cisco. The deal was sealed around September/October 2007, said Sullivan.
