The Australian Taxation Office is seeking a new chief information officer, who will be responsible for an annual IT budget of $400 million.

The CIO role at the Australian Tax Office (ATO) would be “a new position that adds to the existing ATO technology role responsibility with approximately 1,000 application development staff,” an ATO spokesperson told iTnews.

The tax office has two divisions within its IT department--technology and business applications. According to the ATO spokesperson, the successful applicant would be responsible for "overall IT strategy, infrastructure and operations and...all development projects" within the technology division.

It is understood that the new CIO will become a first assistant commissioner, technology.

Peter Wilson is currently the ATO first commissioner, technology. A spokesperson from Wilson's office said the advertised position was a separate position but may replace this role in the long term.

Peter Wilson recently spoke to InformationWeek at its recent roundtable. The full story will appear in the July issue of InformationWeek.
