British Government launches secure intranet

The British Government is spending £40 million on a secure intranet that links up network services for 140 of its departments.

The Government Secure Intranet (GSi) project means that central and local Government employees will have restricted access to email, internet, remote working and a regularly updated central directory.

Telecoms and internet provider Energis signed the five-year contract with the trading arm of the Office of Government Commerce, OGCbuying.solutions. Other companies in the running for the job included BT and Cable & Wireless.
