The networking giant has made a big play for energy and utility companies, devising rugged, heat-resistant routers and switches for their substations and in-home displays for their customers. Australian utilities, many of them Cisco customers, are evaluating the experience of Energy Australia, which has bought 25 rugged switches for their substations with an order potentially for another 175.

The Cisco Connected Grid 2520 24-port switch offers a tough frame able to withstand the punishing conditions found inside a power substation including heavy concentrations of dust and 65-degree temperatures. It runs Cisco IOS, which is already popular with many of Australia's utilities. IEC-61850-3 and IEEE 1613 compliant, no moving parts, SCADA and IEC 61850 Generic Object-Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE) messaging compliant.

Cisco concept of an in-home display that shows how much energy is consumed in real time.
With the move by power companies to time-of-day charging, Cisco's in-home displays show the tariff and costs to date in real time.
Historical costs displayed in real time, so no need to wait to the end of the billing cycle to get a shock.
Peak use times and their higher costs displayed for the householder. There are 350,000 time-of-use meters in NSW and within 10 years all accumulation electromechanical meters will be replaced with smart meters around Australia.
Householders may be able to change their rate plan and update their details through their meters. It will also help with rapid provisioning and withdrawal of supply.
