Edge and IoT critical to Web3 infrastructure

Edge computing and IoT technologies will play a crucial role in developing the infrastructure of Web3.

Digital Nation Australia spoke to Sumir Bhatia, president of Lenovo’s Infrastructure Solutions Group Asia Pacific about the role edge and IoT will play in building out metaverse applications.

According to Bhatia, “Edge computing will be critical in lowering virtual world latency and empowering developers to build better virtual experiences that can accommodate millions of users in shared 3D spaces.

“IoT on the other hand is where you ensure that you are getting information at the source, very close to the users.”

In order to drive the real time responses that are necessary to support augmented and virtual reality, data needs to travel less said Bhatia, which can be supported by both edge and IoT.

For businesses to develop the infrastructure required of a Web3 world, Bhatia said its about leveraging their existing infrastructure and building on that.

“It's not about getting that bulldozer and taking everything out, but looking at actually building little focus areas on specific applications,” he said.

“It could be simple things like applications like AR and VR. And again, these require real time responses. So, some of the infrastructure is again edge servers. You could leverage your existing infrastructure to that part if the infrastructure is able to actually support the speed.”

While the industry is largely taking care of the technology challenges that Web3 presents, Bhatia believes that one of the biggest challenges is in developing the right mindset.

He defined the right mindset for Web3 as “a willingness to accept that there are changes”.

“There is transformation and there are ways that your customer and our customers will be looking at consuming technology very differently. So, the change of mindset is probably the first skill, if you can call it a skill. But its something that you really have to look at,” said Bhatia.
