First pieces of work in infrastructure overhaul.

The Department of Fisheries WA has embarked on a network upgrade as part of a broader transformation of its ICT environment.

Fisheries WA to revamp ICT network

The department said it had recently commissioned a review of its ICT infrastructure and network environments.

The review proposed a new data centre and infrastructure model under which its data centre at Hillarys in Perth's north became the department's primary facility for ICT infrastructure.

The refitted centre was to house a blade server and SAN storage environment that would run enterprise applications including the department's FishEye application suite

The wider project also called for new dark fibre links back to Perth, upgrades to existing local area networks, data connection speed upgrades, and WAN acceleration and new switch infrastructure at remote sites.

The LAN upgrades are now up for tender, as is the establishment of a secure de-militarised zone (DMZ) to support WAN-based applications.

However, not all parts of the department's network overhaul are included.

"This Request precludes the upgrading of any current data links to increase data connection speeds for regional and district offices and the implementation of a dark fibre link between the Hillarys and Perth offices," the department noted.

The winning bidder is required to configure, install and provide maintenance services for the network components as required.

The department hopes to have the LAN upgrades and DMZ commissioned by mid-August. Tenders close Tuesday April 24.
