Dominican Republic election office DDoSed

Multiple distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS) were targeted at the Dominican Republic during its election earlier this month.

The attacks were aimed at the nation’s Junta Central Electoral agency mitigated during the May 20 general election.

DDoS attacks often were launched from infected computers controlled in botnets to typically flood a target system junk traffic, overwhelming it.

Unknown attackers targeted the agency's virtual IPs, and launched application layer (7) attacks.

Both attacks were blocked using the network provider Prolexic.

“Politically motivated DDoS attacks are increasingly common and are often timed to coincide with high profile events such as elections or executed in response to specific government actions,” Prolexic president Stuart Scholly said.
