Check Point charlies hit a spot of patchy bother

Up to 50,000 users experienced firewall crashes after buggy Zone Labs’ ZoneAlarm firewall updates were released.

The crashes occurred on Thursday when the Check Point owned company released Program Advisor updates at 4:00.

The Program Advisor is a daily list of programs the firewall is told to ignore which is updated automatically.

"Zone Labs users began reporting True Vector-related crashes across its ZoneAlarm firewall and security suite product line late this afternoon, June 9th," said a company spokesperson in a statement. "Zone Labs quickly replicated the issue in the company's security lab, identified the cause and resolved it within 5 hours."

Most of the affected parties were in Asia, further updates have since rectified the problem.

The company apologised for the inconvenience and said it was working to prevent it from happening in the future.

In April SC reported Trend Micro users suffered a similar problem when the antivirus company released faulty updates to a range of its products, including OfficeScan and PC-cillin.
