British Telecom is launching a network auditing service, which will analyse traffic on customers' networks, helping them maintain application performance as well as meet their legal requirements.

The BT Applications Assured Infrastructure is a managed service, built for businesses to understand the nature of their data traffic. The company claimed it will be possible to guarantee the performance of prioritised applications by monitoring the traffic and user behaviour.

"European enterprises are wasting a huge amount of money and time trying to sort out application performance problems," said Andy Green, CEO of BT Global Services. "We're providing an intelligent solution that resolves issues before happen. Application performance is what people need."

Gartner research estimates that on average failed applications cost organisations $100,000 per hour.

The service comprises five parts; audit, optimise, monitor, manage and assure. Each sub-service is available individually or as part of a package.

Partners endorsing the scheme include Compuware, Cisco, Oracle and IBM Lotus.

Typical prices for a mid-sized company range from £20,000 for auditing services to £100,000 for monitoring. The BT Applications Assured Infrastructure will be available in April 2004.
