Google officially unveiled its Nexus 7 tablet for the first time at its annual I/O developers conference in San Francisco. The tablet will retail in Australia for $249 (8GB) and $299 (16GB).
The 7-inch Nexus 7 has a 1,280 by 800 pixel screen and is designed to work with Google's Play music and video stores, and YouTube.
Google is aiming the Nexus 7 at Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet, claiming to have the world's largest collection of e-books with some four million in store.
Nexus 7 will come with an updated version of the Android operating system, 4.1 or 'Jelly Bean', that brings a raft of new features and improvements.
The rear of the Nexus 7 has no camera, unlike competing tablets. Google decided to go with just one 1.2 megapixel camera at the front for video calls.
Games use the motion sensors in the Nexus 7.
The size of the Nexus 7 is 198.5 by 120 by 10.45mm, and weighs 340 grams.
Asus built the Nexus 7 for Google, kitting it out with a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, 1 GB RAM and 8 or 16 GB of internal storage. A 4,325mAh battery is said to last up to eight hours of active use.
