In a move overshadowed by sizable layoffs announced this week, Yahoo has named VeriSign's Aristotle Balogh its new chief technology officer (CTO).

Yahoo names VeriSign's Balogh CTO
Balogh, CTO and executive vice president at the certificate provider since last January, will manage Yahoo's technology and engineering operations.

Working from the Sunnyvale, Calif. headquarters of the web-services giant, Balogh will report directly to Jerry Yang, chief executive officer and co-founder.

“In Ari Balogh, Yahoo is adding one of the industry's most talented leaders to our bench-strength of technology experts,” Yang said Tuesday in a news release.

Yahoo told employees on Tuesday that it plans to cut a thousand jobs in its largest mass layoff since the dot-com bust, according to media reports.

Balogh previously served as VeriSign's senior vice president for operations and infrastructure from May 2002 to May 2006 and the company's vice president of engineering from 1999 to 2002. He has also held a number of positions at Network Solutions, SRA Corporation, UPS' Roadnet Technologies and Westinghouse.

A Yahoo spokeswoman said today that the company has no further comment on the appointment.

A representative from VeriSign could not be reached for comment.
