The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), Regional Co-ordination Unit (RCU) has deployed an network security solution to protect UK Regional Government Offices from cyber attacks.

The RCU opted for an all-in-one antivirus-firewall for all 15 of its regional government offices.

The unit said it hopes the solution will protect 2500 of its users from threats such as viruses, and worms to intrusions or inappropriate web content.

"The products offer protection with antivirus, intrusion detection, VPN, content filtering and anti-spam capabilities provided in a single, integrated solution," said Chris Benefield, senior ICT project manager of the Regional Co-ordination Unit.

Total Network Solutions designed the network using security firm Fortinet equipment. A spokesperson from the firm said the network has prevented attacks from MyDoom, NetSky and Bagel entering the Government network.

The firm will also manage antivirus updates.
