Telstra fibre optic cable damaged in NSW storms

Telstra has repaired a flood-damaged fibre optic cable on the NSW far south coast that cut landline access to the Triple Zero emergency network.

A Telstra spokesman told iTnews that the "storm-related transmission issues" at Telstra's Bega node had been fixed by 3am today.

The cables were "not working" between Bega and Eden, according to a statement by NSW Police issued about midnight last night.

The Force said it was working with Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Ambulance to "minimise service disruption" on the back of the outage.

"Telstra technicians are working to repair any water damage and restore services as quickly as possible," Police had said.

"Mobile services are still functioning but landline customers will not be able to access the [emergency call] network."

A mobile alert system had been used to notify residents of the outage.

Telstra's official service status page did not record the outage, noting only some connection issues being experienced by customers around Albion Park and Dapto, near Wollongong - areas also hit by flash flooding from storms that swept across the state this week.
