Channel News Asia reported that the cables belonged to OpenNet, the network builder of Singapore's ultrafast broadband network.

SingTel is one of four joint venture partners in OpenNet.

According to the report, the 35-year-old engineer Terrance Tan Khoon Shan had been let go by SingTel about six months before he started cutting cables in an act of revenge against his supervisors.

The court proceeded on 60 of a total 617 charges laid against the engineer. The report indicated Tan escaped a $10,000 fine for each of the 60 charges.
