New malicious site warnings from Google

The Mountain View, Calif., search engine giant is presenting internet users with warnings of sites reported to StopBadware.org., according to the anti-malware organization's website.

The site, which allows malware victims to report malicious sites to the organization, will eventually replace a general warning page with individually tailored reports, according to information posted on its homepage today.

A Google spokeswoman provided a company statement saying that the new pop-up will warn users about a greater number of malicious sites in time.

"We've put a lot of effort over the past few years into creating a safer online experience for our users, including our recent work with StopBadware.org. We've just begun an initiative to warn users when they click on a search result that leads to a potentially dangerous site," she said. "To begin we'll only be identifying a small number of sites, but we'll be expanding our coverage over time. Finding new and better ways to protect our users is a perpetual project, and we'll continue to work hard in this area."

A representative of StopBadware.org could not immediately be reached for comment.
