"This is the first online store where you can purchase Microsoft products straight from the source," said Microsoft when announcing the new site.

The store will initially be made available to customers in the UK, Germany, the US and Korea. More countries will be coming onboard through the year, according to the firm.

The Microsoft Store will also contain information on all Microsoft products and a version of its latest catalogue.

The European site offers four sections - Windows, Office, Home & Money, Design & Developer - while the US version offers Business, Entertainment Choices and Hardware, including a selection of mice, keyboards, webcams and headsets.

Customers have a choice of three shipping options - one to two business days, two to four business days or 15 business days - depending on price.
