iPad 2-tuned Skype due Tuesday

Geared for iPad's two-way video.

Skype has removed a promotional YouTube video of an app it has developed for the iPad, which was scheduled to be unveiled later this week.

iPad 2-tuned Skype due Tuesday

The new iPad app will be available from the App Store on Tuesday, according to US media reports.

Previously Skype could be used on an iPad, but the user experience was only optimised for the iPhone.

The iPad Skype app will one-up Apple's Facetime, allowing video chat over 3G networks albeit at a much lower quality than over a WiFi network, according to CNet’s review of the product.

“We got passable video calling at best; at worst, the video (and audio) frequently froze,” reviewers wrote of the app's 3G performance

The reviewers found that Skype offered the best result during a call between an iPad and a desktop.

Users of Apple’s first generation iPad will only gain half the benefit of the new video chat feature by being able to view the video of a person with a camera-enabled device.

Although Skype, which is in the process of being acquired by Microsoft, set the video to private mode, one user managed to capture the video without sound and re-post it.
