False start as Steve Burrell resigns for 'personal reasons'.

Australia's Internet Industry Association has been forced to scramble to find new leadership following the sudden departure of its new CEO Steve Burrell for personal reasons.

Burrell was due to take up his post on Monday 12 September after completing his remaining commitments with the Australian Institute of Company Directors, where he has led its strategic communications and media relations, government relations and policy advocacy.

However the IIA has now been forced to begin a search for a new leader, according a statement on its website published late last week.

Former CEO Peter Coroneos had not been approached to fill in since his official retirement on 30 June.

IIA chair Bruce Linn said a replacement for Burrell would be announced shortly.

"Because of the high number of quality applications received during the recruitment process, it was anticipated that the senior executive position would be filled in the near future," Linn said.

“In the meantime the IIA will continue the momentum of being the voice of internet based industries.

"We will continue to work closely with Government to develop robust policies covering areas such as cyber-safety, and making the internet a place where both consumers and businesses can conduct transactions with confidence".
