Chinese telecoms manufacturer Huawei has promised to cut power consumption in its mobile phone base stations by 60 percent..

The company has managed to make the savings by using new power management software to boost efficiency by 45 percent. It has also boosted the power of the stations so that less infrastructure is needed to handle the load.

"Huawei has always been committed to looking after the environment," said Yu Chengdong, president of Huawei's wireless product line.

"As one of the leading telecom equipment and solutions providers, we are putting this goal into practice by designing environmentally friendly products. "

The base stations also use a new design to reduce the need for cooling, a major cause of power consumption and environmental noise. The stations can be integrated with solar, wind or gas power systems.
