New layout and navigation tools introduced.

Google has introduced a updated look for its search results pages.

The company said that the redesign would aim to add several new search options to the conventional Google search service.

The central part of the update is the addition of a navigation bar which will presented on the left-hand side of the search page.

The bar will offer users three different options for sorting and navigating search results. One such option will be Google Square, an experimental service which suggests related items to the users search query.

Other items on the bar include the Universal Search option which presents results from various Google search tools, and the Search Options customisation service.

In addition to the navigation bar, the update includes a tweak to the search page's colour pallet which Google says will provide a more 'modern' look.

"The new design refreshes and streamlines the look, feel and functionality of Google, making it easier to pinpoint what you’re looking for," wrote Goole vice president of search products and user experience Marisa Mayer in a post to the official company blog.

"Today’s changes are the latest in our continuing efforts to evolve and improve Google."
