Google now owns three quarters of UK search

By

More than three quarters of all internet searches are conducted by Google, according to market research firm comScore..

Google sites hosted 75.3 per cent of all UK search queries during the month of June, followed by eBay which hosted 5.5 per cent and then Google's rival Yahoo with 4.3 per cent.

But Google's monopoly might be dangerous for consumers, according to experts, who warn that the firm now has too much power.

"It is absolutely crucial that competition remains in search engine market," said new media commenter, Martin Warner, also co-founder of technology show, Technology of Tomorrow.

"The argument for Yahoo to merge with Microsoft is now more compelling than ever for them to produce an effective competition to Google," Warner argued.

According to monitoring firm Hitwise, Google's dominance is actually even greater, with its figures saying that nearly nine out of 10 internet searches in the UK in June were powered by Google.
