The technology would allow the ABC to "expand the reach of its high-definition and standard-definition digital TV programming across the country", it said in a statement.

About 247,000 Australian households were located in digital TV blackspots - remote areas where free-to-air digital TV signals couldn't be received by TV antennas, according to the vendor.

"Managing bandwidth and maintaining high-quality pictures is critical in such a major digital TV rollout," it said.

The technology would be rolled out from December.
