Australia’s nuclear regulator hunts for a CIO

The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) has advertised for a chief information officer, with security set to be one of the main focuses of the role.

The CIO will be based out of the nuclear safety agency’s complex in the outer-northwest Melbourne suburb of Yallambie.

It is a senior role within the agency, answering to both the head of corporate services and chief financial officer, and responsible for leading all IT staff.

Alongside IT and information services, the CIO will have responsibilities across records management, and will become the agency’s cybersecurity leader.

“The occupant will require a full breadth of skills that allows the agency to capitalise on the increase in government-managed initiatives, embraces disruptive technology, searches for technologies to drive innovation, whilst delivering on business demand and fostering business intelligence,” ARPANSA said in its position description.

The sensitive nature of the position means the successful candidate will need to maintain a high level security clearance and hold Australian citizenship.

While the position is not new, when contacted by iTnews a spokesperson for ARPANSA declined to comment on the circumstances surrounding the vacancy.

ARPANSA’s responsibilities include the measurement of radiation, licensing nuclear facilities, conducting scientific research into nuclear activities and making assessments about their health impacts.

In the telecommunications arena, ARPANSA has played a crucial role in public debates about the safety of NBN fixed wireless towers, wi-fi in schools, radiation from mobile phones, ‘wi-fi allergies’, and the location of mobile phone towers.
