The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has said farewell to its chief data and analytics officer of almost five years, Darshil Mehta.

Mehta made the move to law firm King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) for the newly created role of chief data officer earlier this month.

For close to five years, Mehta worked at ASIC in various data and analytics roles, most notably as its top chief data and analytics officer.

ASIC declined to comment on Mehta's departure, but said in a statement to iTnews: "ASIC has a highly specialised data, digital and AI team."

"This team continues to work to strengthen ASIC's digital capability and data governance, and to leverage data to help ASIC achieve its regulatory aims,” the spokesperson added.

Meanwhile, speaking to iTnews, Mehta called the transition a "really exciting opportunity".

"I’ll be working closely with KWM’s operational, information security and innovation teams to shape and lead the firm’s data strategy," he said.

“My goals are to safeguard the trust our clients and our people place in King & Wood Mallesons, as well as foster a culture of data excellence. I’ll be bringing all my private and public sector strategy experience to bear on the challenge."

KWM’s chief operating officer Tim Finlayson said the newly created role would help "raise the bar" at the law firm

“This position is an investment in ensuring the protection of information we collect, use and store," he said.

"Properly understood, we know our data is a powerful educational asset to develop our people and ultimately better assist our clients.

“Darshil’s position brings the various streams of work that we currently manage ‘under one roof’. We believe he can deliver another level of data insight and innovation for us."
