The iconic SV1 "red silo" – the data centre's customer care area.
Looking through the meeting rooms in the foyer area into the caged areas of the data centre.
Because everything goes onto the slab – there’s no traditional raised floor – Equinix had to put a lot more stuff overhead. The cable distribution design is patented – The yellow tray at the bottom are fibre interconnects.
The Equinix Exchange located in SV1 encompasses peering points that serve other Equinix centres in the Silicon Valley area – SV2, SV3 and SV4 – via a diverse fibre ring connecting the facilities.
Computer room air conditioning units on the floor of phase one of SV1.
This gives an idea of the scale of SV1 – a lot of CRAC units right there.
Looking down one of the rows of customer cages in SV1. It’s the size of facilities like these that is just mind-blowing, especially when you realise who’s in some of those cages. But that would be telling…!
A familiar view of an Equinix facility for those of you that have seen our gallery and profile of Sydney2. This is San Jose, though.
Side view of an air handling unit (AHU) that is used for free cooling. It’s one of 13 units located in three rooms in the SV1 data centre.
The view inside an AHU . On the left is the vent that opens to outside air when the temperature is low enough. That air passes through a series of filters on the right (obscured).
A view of AHUs at SV1. Check out the heavy duty door on the opposite side of the AHU to that shown in the previous photo. See what happens next when we open it…
Inside the other end of an AHU … is a gale. This is as steady as we could hold the camera while peering into it. It took some serious muscle to get the door open and then again to close it up.
SV1 uses Caterpillar diesel engine generators in an N+1 redundancy configuration. Like everything else in SV1, it’s the scale of the place that sets it apart from some of the other tours iTnews has been on.
Close-up of one of the diesel engine generators.
Diesel engine generator control panel.
Main switch gear for the entire International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre facility.
The chilled water plant used in phase two of SV1.
SV1 uses Liebert uninterruptible power supplies. It has four (4) in the facility for phase one, and five (5) for phase two.
Awesome battery array for one of the UPS modules at SV1 in San Jose.
Equinix has started work on the SV5 data centre to be located on adjacent land to SV1 somewhere near San Jose.
Phase one of the new SV5 is due for completion later this year.
