Digital identity firm VeriSign has been chosen to manage a global directory for radio-frequency identification (RFID) product numbers.

Standards organisation EPCglobal awarded VeriSign the contract to run the directory service, which will point users to product websites when information is requested. Using the system, products may be tracked as they move through the distribution chain into the homes of consumers.

EPCglobal is made up of two standards bodies; EAN International of Brussels and the Uniform Code Council of Lawrenceville, New.Jersey.
