A hacker group by the name of The Script Kiddies has hijacked the Twitter feed of news publication USA Today to spruik its Facebook page.

The group previously rose to infamy after it cracked the Twitter account of NBC and published fake news stories reporting terrorists attacks on the September 11 anniversary.

The group was thought to have used a trojan horse to compromise the account.

The Script Kiddies -- a name that denotes unskilled hacking -- used the USA Today Twitter feed to draw followers to its Facebook page.

USA Today notified followers that its account was hacked and "as a result false tweets were sent".

Twitter suspended the account @S-kiddies shortly after inquiries by SC about how its suspension policy applied to black hat hackers.

The Script Kiddies' Facebook page remains active.

In July, The Script Kiddies posted fake news stories on Fox News' Twitter account claiming US President Barack Obama was assassinated.

Later that month, the group compromised the Facebook account of pharmaceutical giant Pfizer.
