US SMEs spent $1.8 billion on IT security in 2003

Small-to-mid-sized businesses (SMEs) in the US spent a total of $1.8 billion on IT security during 2003.

However, according to research from Access Markets International, many firms are unwilling to make new purchases, regarding their investments as sufficient protection.

AMI's research found that more than 1.2 million small businesses,
along with 67,000 mid-sized firms were interested in enhancing their
existing IT security systems, although 2.8 million small businesses
with PCs had no real IT security in place.

The study found that anti-virus software and firewalls were common in US SMEs. Smaller businesses appeared to be installing intrusion detection, VPNs and remote data backup systems.

At the end of 2003, AMI said more than 425,000 small businesses
in the US were using VPN technology.
