University gets tough on wireless security

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff has implemented Computer Associates' Wireless Site Management to monitor rogue access points and limit the broadcast ranges within the university grounds.

"We operate one of the most advanced campus wireless networks in the US," said Maurice Ficklin, director of technical services for the university. "We can now see who is trying to steal our bandwidth, and we can change our user policies all on a GUI [graphical user interface]".

Ficklin said the university is soon aiming to have 8,000 wireless devices, including wireless cell phones, running on its network.

The university is also working with officials in Arkansas city on plans to deploy a wireless network for the 60,000 people living there.
