To access the data in the OnlineSafe, users enter the correct password and the content of the safe appears as a drive in Windows Explorer.
The safe contents can be processed like normal Windows files, allowing users to add new information, change existing information or delete it from the safe.
As soon as new data is added or modified, it is encrypted and sent over the secure link to the Steganos server.
Data can be downloaded from the safe anywhere in the world, provided that the user can install the application software. There is no way to recover data if users forget their passwords.
Aston Fallen, chief executive at Steganos, said: "Irreplaceable digital photos, travel documents, private tax records and valuable insurance documents can now be protected from loss and destruction, and recovered wherever the owner can get internet access."
