Email security provider Proofpoint has acquired an on-demand email archiving vendor to boost its offerings.

Email security provider Proofpoint announced Tuesday it is has acquired Fortiva, which offers on-demand email archiving solutions for compliance.

The deal, a price tag was not disclosed, will help round out Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Proofpoint's software-as-a-service unified email security and data loss prevention portfolio, according to a news release issued by Proofpoint.

Toronto-based Fortiva's archiving offering helps companies perform legal discovery and storage management and meet regulatory compliance demands, the release said.

Michael Osterman, president of Osterman Research, said in the release that many organizations are beginning to realize the benefit of email retention.

"Companies of all sizes should be archiving email, so they are prepared to meet legal discovery, supervisory and retention requirements that impact them," he said, adding that archiving data is easier to retrieve than if it were on a backup.

Companies have been spurred to adopt email archiving solutions by amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, which codified requirements for electronic discovery during litigation.
