Primus Telecommunications Group (PTGi) has appointed US retail and network services president Tom Mazerski to replace outgoing Australian chief executive officer Ravi Bhatia.

Mazerski, who has been with the company since 2009, will also become Chief Market Officer for the company as part of a globally unified marketing initiative that will begin "immediately".

"The new Primus Australia will be an exciting place to work for our employees and our customers will begin to see positive changes right away," Mazerski said in a statement.

He indicated the company would soon launch a "Come Home to Primus" marketing campaign and new calling plans.

It was unclear whether the local provider would retain its iPrimus branding, named after becoming the first subsidiary to offer internet services.

Mazerski began Monday, replacing Bhatia who announced his departure from the company in mid-July. However it was expected Bhatia would retain an advisory role with the company for at least six months.
