The Portugal Telecom Group has implemented a web-filtering product to protect users of its outdoor web phones from unsuitable content.

The Marconi NET 800 units, which act as computers and pay phones, are part of the national operator's plan to provide interactive broadband services throughout Portugal.

"Anyone of any age can access the internet from these terminals so we required a secure and reliable filtering solution," said director of the public phone division,. Catarino Narciso. "We believe this is the future of pay telephones, but to achieve this we needed to bring safe public internet access to the millions residents and visitors across Portugal."

SurfControl sold its Content Portal Authority solution to the firm. The phones now have safeguards to block websites deemed to be inappropriate and delete user information after logging off the machine.
