Oracle has acquired Oblix, a privately held supplier of identity and web services management software.

Oblix software provides web access control such as single sign-on and user provisioning.

Oblix's technology complements the identity and access management capabilities in Oracle Identity Management and included in Oracle Application Server 10g, according to Oracle executives.

"This acquisition will allow Oracle to offer customers a complete solution for managing identities; one that is even more flexible, scalable, and integrated, and helps customers lower the cost of regulatory compliance," Thomas Kurian, senior vice president, Oracle Server Technologies, said in a statement.

Oblix customers include American Airlines, British Airways, Cisco Systems, and General Motors.

Oracle executives said the Oblix products, including COREid, SHAREid, and COREsv, will continue to be available as stand-alone items. The company also plans to include Oblix capabilities into its broader identity management technology.

"This falls right into the security and privacy issues that are a result of HIPAA," said Scott Tiazkun, analyst at IDC. "If Oracle positions this product properly, it could strengthen its healthcare IT offerings to compete with suppliers like Carefx and Sentillion"
