New version of Communication Server.

Nortel has released an updated version of its Communication Server unified communication tool.

The new CS 1000 Release 6.0 model will allow servers to run with increased efficiency and security.

Designed to serve as the backbone for enterprise communication platforms, CS 1000 operates as the primary server which other unified communication devices, such as telephony systems, can be managed from.

The company hopes that the newest CS 1000 release will further simplify communication management by centralizing more of the basic unified communication functions, including voice calling and instant messaging.

Energy efficiency was also a key selling point for Nortel. The company estimates that the new CS 1000 release will allow the server platform to operate with as much as 40 per cent less energy than competing unified communications servers.

The concept of unifying and centralising communications and other network operations has become a primary focus within the IT industry in recent years.

Networking firms such as Nortel and Cisco have long sought to bring unified communication systems to the enterprise level, while firms such as Netgear have begun to deploy similar converged systems for small and medium-sized businesses.
