Macquarie University is looking for a permanent replacement for former chief information security officer (CISO) Jeremy Koster, who left in July 2023.

The rule is currently held in an acting capacity by Shad Thakkar.

The permanent CISO will “develop and implement Macquarie University's information technology (IT) security strategy whilst protecting the business from information security breaches and cyber environment threats", according to a recruitment advertisement.

Macquarie University said it also wants a “robust plan to uplift cyber security understanding across the organisation”, as well as someone who can contribute to an “ambitious” digital transformation.

The role became vacant when Jeremy Koster left in July 2023, following nearly seven years with the university that included more than three years as security manager, followed by a three-year-plus stint as CISO.

After Macquarie University, Koster spent time as head of security operations for the Australian National University, before taking up a position in cyber and identity operations for Transgrid.

In September 2023, Jonathan Covell became chief information and digital officer at the university, having acted as CIO since Tim Hume’s departure in August 2023.
