Highly anticipated PC game Half-Life 2 has broken Australian sales records.

The game has sold more than 20,000 copies since going on sale on 17 November, according to Vivendi Universal Games.

Previously, Electronic Arts held the top spot with Sims 2. Half-Life 2 broke the old record by 50 percent.

Vivendi Universal Games managing director Pascal Broshier said: "Half-Life 2's ground breaking technology and immersive gameplay mark a new era in PC gaming and we are proud to be a part of it."

The 20,000 figure does not include copies purchased via 'Steam'. The new online delivery system is believed to account for an even larger number of purchased copies. Steam is administered by the game's developer Valve.
