FreshTel has signed a memorandum of understanding with Australian telecommunications engineering firm Star-Tech Communications to install Internet telephony services in student accommodation building at several universities across Australia.

The Internet telephony access will be available to around 3000 students and administration staff across five local universities – who currently have access to Star-Tech’s broadband Internet service at university halls of residence. Freshtel’s services will also be rolled out to another four sites by the end of 2008.

Jean Morel, division general manager of Star-Tech said the service has already been implemented at the University of Melbourne’s Graduate House, where 20 Siemens C470IP DECT wireless handsets and 50 IP desk phones are pre-configured for student use on the FreshTel network.

“FreshTel’s products and services support and complement our offering. When we discussed our plans it was willing to develop and evolve its products and customer support for our vertical market,” he said.

FreshTel is also promoting its Internet telephony service to students at Macquarie University Village, Griffith University Village, RMIT Village and Victoria University’s Sunbury Hall – where Star-Tech is the Internet service provider, said Morel.
