Boston iron meets Mountain View.

EMC claims to have “developed” a Google connector for its new mid-range storage line that promises to speed up enterprise search for organisations using Google’s yellow search box.

EMC opens VNX to Google’s yellow box

The connector allows the Google Search Appliance to index content changes on EMC’s VNX unified storage.

The concept appears to be based on Google’s existing connectors that allow its yellow box to index information on various content management platforms -- Microsoft’s SharePoint, EMC Documentum or IBM’s FileNet.

Customers using both EMC’s VNX and Google’s appliance will see a more current version of their organisation’s information, according to Google and EMC statements.

When file and metadata are altered on VNX machines, EMC’s connector will send notifications of those changes to Google’s GSA. The end result will be more up-to-date information for organisations that need that level of speed.

While Google admits the connector itself is EMC’s innovation, it points out that it is essentially an implementation of Google’s connector technology.

We’re excited to be working with EMC on this unique implementation of our connector technology,” Rajat Mukherjee, Google Enterprise Search Group Product Manager said.

EMC launched its VNX midrange “unified” storage devices in January, with prices starting at US$10,000.
