Bendigo co-op goes for cloud storage

Community telco preps for NBN.

Bendigo Community Telco is set to roll out a cloud-based backup system for its customers based on CommVault technology.

Bendigo co-op goes for cloud storage

According to systems manager Matt De-Vincentis, the co-op began its move into cloud and infrastructure as a service (IaaS) around three years ago.

Since then, it has come to realise its customers were also calling for a cloud-based back-up system.

“We went with CommVault because it scales very well,” he said.

The Community Telco has two regional data centres, hosting clients with needs ranging from hundreds of virtual servers to small business with a single virtual server.

The new back-up solution offers a selection of tiered back-up plans, from a single snapshot to granular file-level back-ups.

“Customers can also choose a range of back-up from keeping the image for 28 days all the way through to essentially keeping back-ups forever.”

Bendigo Community Telco was founded 11 years ago as an offshoot of the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank. The Bank remains a shareholder, however the telco is now a stand-alone, co-operative entity.

“We began by offering services to business such as fixed line, long distance and dial-up,” said De-Vincentis.

“We then moved into broadband, and when our customers started asking about cloud and virtualisation, we began offering those services hosted in our own data centre.”

De-Vincentas said the telco is positioning itself for the rollout of the NBN, but said wholesale arrangements hadn’t been confirmed with NBN Co.

“We’ll be ready to go when it becomes available,” he said.
