Belgium's largest telco victim to years-long espionage campaign

Belgacom, Belgium's largest telecommunications company, has fallen victim to a nation-state sponsored spy campaign, country officials revealed.

Federal prosecutors in Belgium today said that the “hacking was only possible by an intruder with significant financial and logistic means,” Reuters reported, leading investigators to determine that the attacks were the result of “state-sponsored cyber espionage.”

For two years, hackers were able to carry out surveillance of Belgacom's networks, which were compromised by malware and “advanced encryption techniques," according to the report.

De Standaard, a major newspaper in Belgium, suggested that the National Security Agency (NSA) was responsible for the espionage campaign.

Neither Belgium officials or Belgacom have named the suspected culprit. Belgacom filed a complaint against the unknown responsible party in July.
