Anti-spam man slams wireless firms

By

Anti-spam vendor Commtouch has slammed wireless router manufacturers for failing to protect networks from spammers.

Staff at Commtouch said that wireless is set to become the next vehicle for spammers to distribute junk mail unless the firms take action.

"Wireless router manufacturers should prevent this problem by enforcing, by default, an encrypted communication between the wireless clients and the wireless hub," said Commtouch vice president Avner Amram. "This way, only authorized users will be able to use the router."

Commtouch also said that the anti-spam solution, SenderID, can be compromised by spammers who penetrate wireless networks.

Amram said that exploiting wireless routers in home networks allows spammers to shift from the illegal tactic of using zombies and open proxies.
