Optus’ D3 satellite successfully entered orbit after lift-off from the Arianespace facility in French Guiana.

Ariane 5 clears the tower for its 34-minute flight. This was the fourth of seven Ariane 5 missions planned in 2009.

Ariane 5 on the launch pad. Surrounding the site are four large towers that provide protection against lightning strikes.

Through the trees - a view of the rocket carrying the twin satellite payload including the Optus D3.

The JCSAT-12 and Optus D3 satellites are encapsulated in a long version of Ariane 5’s payload fairing, which is 17 metres tall, according to Arianespace.
